Theological interpretation of Bach's cantatas
Johan van Veen wrote (December 10, 2004):
Recently Martin Petzoldt, professor in dogmatics and pastor at the St Thomas' in Leipzig, has published the first of three volumes, in which he gives a theological interpretation of Bach's cantatas. It is written in German; its title is: Bach-Kommentar. Theologisch-musikwissenschaftliche Kommentierung der geistlichen Vokalwerke Johann Sebastian Bachs. Petzoldt is a well-respected Bach-scholar.
So far I have found one review online which is very critical, in particular because of erroneous translations of Latin words, expressions and phrases.
They can be found here:
http://www.music.qub.ac.uk/tomita/bachbib/review/bb-review_Petzoldt_Komm1.html
http://www.palatina-verlag.de/bach.htm (here a pdf-file with an extensive critique can be downloaded).
Referring to these sites doesn't mean that I share the criticism, since I haven't read the book yet and, even if I had done so, am not qualified to give a fair assessment of this publication.
Just to correct what I wrote: there is one critical review on the first site mentioned in the list below. A more extensive criticism by the same author - in pdf-format - can be found on the second site in the list. Since the author is the same, it is basically one review.
